Together…We Make A Difference
As Hamptonians around the world prepare to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holidays, please pause to reflect on the true reason for the season. It is an opportunity to express our gratitude for the multitude of our blessings, to remember those in most need, and to give generously. With the countless numbers of tragic events affecting people in all walks of life during 2017, we know the impact touched members of our Hampton family. As a people of God, we must pray, not only for ourselves and our loved ones, but for the health and prosperity of our entire nation.
As my term as your President concludes at the end of this fiscal year, I find myself being prayerful as I reflect on our shared joys, conquered challenges, and tremendous accomplishments. During my regional travels, you amazed me with your extraordinary hospitality, loving commitment, and unrelenting willingness to share resources among the multi-generations of Hamptonians working together to strengthen our enduring legacy.
Our steadfast legacy has renewed meaning as we anticipate the celebration of two history making Hampton University milestone events in 2018: the Sesquicentennial anniversary of Hampton Institute/University and the 40th anniversary of our President, Dr. William R. Harvey.
With our legacy being foremost as we approach these two historic moments, I am endlessly proud to report our collective outcomes in our quest to fulfill the $15 million challenge given to us by Dr. Harvey three years ago. By no small measure, as of June 30, 2017, alumni have donated a total of $12,339,000 and increased our donor base from 18% to 32%. These are significant accomplishments, but our work is not done. We need to not only meet our desired goal, but exceed it, further amplifying the fact that Hamptonians “Dream No Small Dreams.” No challenge is too big to overcome when we work together. Excellence for us goes well beyond the baseline.
Our legacy will endure with these and future donations that will be used to provide scholarships for the next generation of Hamptonian leaders. As you continue to give in 2018 and beyond, consider targeting your donations to a specific Endowed Scholarship of your own choosing or earmark the NHAA, Inc.’s Endowed Scholarship. Your deeply appreciated tax-deductible contributions will be reflected with your class, chapter, and region.
The National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. has a storied place in history, dating back over 130 years with Booker T. Washington, class of 1875, serving as our first president. Mr. Washington stressed the importance of alumni to any University. He emphasized that Hamptonians are critical to the sustainability and advancement of Hampton’s rich historic legacy. He reminded that us that “Success waits patiently for anyone who has the determination and strength to seize it.” We possess that determination and strength.
As such, in March 2018 you will be voting for new officers to lead the NHAA, Inc., while preparations are being made for our 13th Biennial Convention in Chicago, which will be held August 2-5, 2018 . Your eligibility to vote rests with your generosity to Hampton with ballots being provided to donors contributing to Hampton within the past five years. As with any election, I know that you will review the qualifications of the candidates and vote for those individuals who will proudly represent you and our beloved Association. In turn, the Biennial Convention is open to all and represents an opportunity to hear the state of the University and ask your questions, as well as witness our magnificent choir and network with Hamptonians from across the nation. Additional information regarding the upcoming elections and the convention will be forth coming.
As we approach the holiday season, let us remember Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.” We can continue to provide service to others with our generosity of time and resources. We are changing lives with our gifts to our alma mater.
I extend my sincere gratitude to each of you for your individual efforts that collectively continue to enhance the greatness of our students, Hampton University, and the NHAA, Inc.
May God unceasingly pour down His blessings on you, your families, and other loved ones. I pray that you and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and a Prosperous New Year in 2018! Let us continue to pray for and love each other as we generously support our Beloved Home by the Sea.
Hampton love always,
Dorothy M. Lee-Murray ‘80
